An alligator is a prehistoric reptile with many interesting qualities. Did you know a large alligator can weigh up to one thousand pounds? They can also normally live to about fifty years old in the wild. Each alligator has a strong, muscular tail, and a tough body. One can tell the difference between younger and older alligators by the color of their tail stripes. Older alligators have stripes that are dark while those that are younger have a bright yellow. All alligators "hibernate" during cold weather and dig tunnels under the water, which can be up to 65 feet long.
