The reindeer is a magnificent mammal and resides in North America and Northern Europe in forest and mountain areas. There are around twenty different reindeer species around the globe. The most common sub species is the North American Caribou. The reindeer are different than their relatives, because both male and female reindeer grow antlers. During the wintertime they shed their antlers and regrow them after the season ends. An adult can grow to a height of almost four feet and weigh as much as three hundred pounds.
Since the reindeer live half of their life in a cold environment they are known to travel in herds. Their herd can contain anywhere from twenty to thousands. They constantly move to keep warm and to find food. Their hooves act like huge snowshoes and accommodate traveling long distances on ice and snow. During winter, they will dig holes many feet deep into the snow until they reach the frozen grass beneath to eat.
