Plush Frog Toy Facts:

The plush frog can be found worldwide and there are more than 5,000 species discovered. All plush frogs are amphibians, which means they are born able to breathe in water and later as an adult breathe air.

The frog plush toy's skin is smoother and softer than their toad relatives. Some frogs are poisonous and secrete a toxic substance underneath their skin. Poisonous frogs can be detected by their bright colors on their skin and warns any predators to think twice.

However, one colored plush frog known as the red-eyed tree frog are not poisonous. They have neon green bodies, red eyes, and blue striped legs and yellow or orange feet. The frog plush toy colors protect them when sleeping on leaves during the day because when they are awakened by a predator it flashes it's feet and bulging red eyes. This makes the predator think again before getting a meal, which gives them enough time to jump away to safety. While jumping away it can cause their predator's eyes to overstimulate resulting in a ghost like image of the frog as it moves.

Even though poisonous plush frogs can be deadly to their predators, scientists think they can help humans. Currently scientists have discovered that the toxin in some poisonous dart frogs can be a painkiller 200 times more strong then morphine. They are also testing chemicals underneath the plush frogs skin that create this poison to possibly develop a resistance to HIV for the human population.

The most unique characteristic of the plush frog are their webbed feet and long sticky tongues. Frogs have great hearing and when they notice a nearby meal they quickly flick out their long tongue to catch their prey. Their large mouths do not have teeth so they have to capture only small insects due to having to swallow their food whole. Surprisingly, the plush frogs diet does not include drinking water. They stay hydrated by swimming in water due to their skin absorbing all the water their bodies need.
