Dolphins are a toothed whale related to the porpoise. There are 37 species that all travel in schools and swim up to 25 miles per hour. The common dolphin is brownish-black on top and white on its belly. They also have stripes of tan or yellow along their sides. They’re found mostly in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic.

One of the most famous bottlenose dolphins in the world was first brought to our attention in the 1964 television show Flipper. Flipper the dolphin was meant to be the sea version of the dog Lassie (also made famous in a television series) as like Lassie, she came to the rescue of those in need. Flipper was also a wild pet to the Ricks family portrayed in the show and most of what she did was look out for them. Not surprisingly, during the run of the series dolphin merchandise like books and lunchboxes were in high demand.

Another interesting fact about dolphins are that they are similar to cows because dolphins have more than one stomach. One to store their food and another to digest it. They also can sleep while swimming in the water by shutting down one side of their brain. The other side remains awake so they can both breath and watch for predators.

No matter which way you look at it, dolphins are amazing and fascinating creatures. There are close to 40 species of these unique mammals, but none more recognizable than the bottlenose dolphin. They are typically seen by millions every year as they are often featured in marine parks like Sea World located in Florida. In addition, there are also several vacation spots in the world where swimming with dolphins is a very popular pastime. It’s no surprise then, that plush dolphin stuffed animals are just as popular as the real thing.
