Koala Bear Plush Facts:
A plush koala are native to eastern portions of Australia where eucalyptus or gum trees are their home. The Koala bear plush sleeps as much as 3/4 of the day in their tree, which is seventy five percent of their existence. Koala plush come to life after dark and communicate via a "bark" to other members of their species as they move from tree to tree. The popularity of the koala bear plush is due to it's adorable white tipped ears and extremely soft fur.
The plush koala eats eucalyptus leaves which are low in nutrients hence their slow metabolic rate as a species. The diet of the koala plush is a rarity as far as animal's being able to survive on it. The majority of animals find the eucalyptus leaves koalas feed on to be toxic and very harmful to their health. However, the digestive system of a plush koala is unique in that it can process these poisonous toxins and absorb the nutrients in the leaves. Koalas can eat at most a half a kg of eucalyptus leaves daily. Koala plush rarely drink water because they get what they need from the leaves. Due to the eucalyptus leaves being comprised of 50% water.
Although a plush koala are popularly classified as bears, they belong to the animals called the marsupial. The koala bear plush females have a pouch in which to carry their young much like other animals native to Australia. Female koalas can have up to six babies in their lifetime. New born plush koalas weigh less than 1 gram and are less than one inch long. When a koala plush is born it is bald and does not have sight. Koalas remain in their mom's pouch from birth until the age of six months when they have sufficiently developed claws for climbing and their sense of smell. The baby will come out of Mom's pouch and remain attached to her back or stomach until one year of age.
The average life span of a koala bear plush is seventeen years old. Fossilized remains indicate that koalas existed as much as 40 million years ago. Plush koalas do not move into the territory in which another lived until a year after their death.
